File this next story under “lunchtime disappointment” as MLB Trade rumours is reporting Etobicoke native Joey Votto is closing in on a monster contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

It is expected to be finalized in days.

Blue Jays Rumour Roundup – March 19, 2012

No spring training action with the off day and only a few odds and ends today:

*The Blue Jays remain interested in upgrading their rotation, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com tweets. It doesn’t sound like the chances of a deal involving Gavin Floyd are particularly high, however.

*Not sure what to make of what Joey Votto said when he told Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that it’d be tough for a premium position player to sign a five-year deal. “No matter how fond a person is of the city, players have to maximize the number of years,” Votto said. The first baseman, who is under contract with the Reds through 2013, says Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols “did excellent” in free agency this offseason. Votto added that he would like to stay with the Reds and that the Cincinnati market seems strong.

*Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com took some questions from Blue Jays fans including who he thought was leading the left-field competition between Travis Snider and Eric Thames.

*Boy wonder Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals was optioned to AAA today where he will begin his season in the minor leagues.  Fangraphs had a further look at this development for the 19-year old outfielder widely considered the top prospect in baseball.

  • Not sure where Pat Tabler is getting his data but Pitch F/X has Stroman's curveball thrown 12.3% and is easily his least effective pitch. 15 hours ago
  • Daniel Norris is the man and I hope he really develops into an ace but that life sized Jebus cross around his neck is a tad obnoxious. 16 hours ago
  • Has a team wasted more money on scouting potential Cuban and Asian free agents than the #BlueJays? Motto: scout everyone, sign nobody. 1 day ago
  • Christian Vasquez is such a great receiver. He makes clear balls look like near strikes. Jays lack that top notch framing from catcher. 2 days ago
  • Green light on 3-0 for a heavily slumping Jose Bautista is not smart. 2 days ago
