Blue Jays Pursuing Gavin Floyd?

Ben Nicholson-Smith at MLB trade rumours reports:

The Blue Jays continue pursuing White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd, Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports report. Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos has interest in upgrading the club’s rotation before Opening Day, the FOX reporters add.

The Blue Jays and White Sox have had dialogue about Floyd since Spring Training began, according to Rosenthal and Morosi. The 29-year-old will earn $7MM in 2012 and his contract includes a $9.5MM club option for 2013. Henderson Alvarez and Dustin McGowan currently profile as the club’s fourth and fifth starters. Alvarez has just ten big league appearances and though McGowan is looking sharp this spring, he has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, appearing in just five big league games since 2008.

The Blue Jays’ pitching staff includes two relievers who were traded to Toronto after finishing the 2011 season with the White Sox: closer Sergio Santos and right-hander Jason Frasor. Anthopoulos and GM Kenny Williams have completed three trades since last summer, as MLBTR’s Transaction Tracker shows.

Analysis: Floyd would be a solid addition to the current starting rotation which is a real question mark for the Jays this season and could be a real hindrance to being a contender.  In addition to being an innings eater Floyd has been one of the most reliable and consistent performers over the past four seasons.

Season IP ERA FIP K/9 HR/9 WAR
2008 206.1 4.77 3.84 6.3 1.31 2.5
2009 193.0 4.06 3.77 7.6 0.98 4.5
2010 187.1 4.08 3.46 7.2 0.67 4.3
2011 193.2 4.37 3.81 7.0 1.02 3.6

Not a star by any means but considering his home park Floyd has a fairly impressive track record.  He would instantly slide into the third slot of the rotation and would be a dependable work horse if he can stay healthy, which judging by the past looks relatively safe.

The price to acquire Floyd is unknown but he wouldn’t likely come cheap, considering Sergio Santos was acquired for Nestor Molina (perhaps our number 11 or 12 rated prospect if he was kept) it might cost the Jays a guy like Drew Hutchison, whom I rated the Jays #8 prospect for 2012 or perhaps two high ceiling lower level guys.  That is just pure speculation though.

ZIPS projects Gavin Floyd to produce a 4.08 ERA, 3.75 FIP, 7.2 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 and a 0.97 HR/9 in 185 innings for the upcoming 2012 season.  Those kind of numbers would be a welcome addition given some of the uncertainty in the Jays rotation.
