Blue Jays Rumour Roundup – March 31, 2012

Here is a weekend edition of Blue Jays rumours as well as a few interesting tidbits around the AL East as well.

-Another spring training victory today for the Blue Jays, defeating the Philles 8-5.  Yahoo sports has a piece on 2012 Spring Training winners and losers and had this to say about the Jays so far this spring:

The Toronto Blue Jays are 23-5 this spring, by far the best record in Florida or Arizona. They have the best winning percentage of any team since 1997. After a 2-2 start, the Blue Jays won 10 in a row. Then they lost two split-squad games in one day before embarking on another 10-game winning streak. They got beat Friday, and the clubhouse joke is that it’s the only thing that kept them from a berth in the Final Four.

“Winning means we are prepared and playing well, not just the big-league guys but the minor-league guys who played the second half of these games,” said right fielder Jose Bautista, the Blue Jays’ best player. “But the wins don’t count. We all know that.”

The Jays’ minor-league talent is ranked No. 5 overall by Baseball America. General manager Alex Anthopoulos is beginning his third year, and he’s already restocked the farm system with solid prospects through trades and the MLB draft. Toronto’s stockpile of young pitchers is especially impressive.

Third baseman Brett Lawrie, one of the best young hitters in the game and already a fixture in the lineup, is batting .545 this spring. Yet not all of Toronto’s spring performers are spring chickens: Omar Vizquel, a 24-year veteran who will turn 45 in April, made the team in an infield utility role after batting .452.

Whether 23-5 or 5-23, the Jays would still be pegged to finish fourth in the highly competitive American League East division. They’ve been baseball’s best fourth-place team each of the past four years, which might even exceed a Grapefruit League title in the pantheon of useless accomplishments.

But two 10-game winning streaks do make the Jays unmistakable spring winners in our accounting.

-Adam Lind expects to be back in the lineup for the Blue Jays tomorrow (Sunday, April 1)

“He’s feeling better, he’s pain free,” Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. “He’ll take some ground balls, he’ll take BP on the field, so we’re hopeful he’s back in the lineup [Sunday].”

- The much discussed Blue Jays starting rotation has not yet officially been announced by manager John Farrell:

“Probably before we get on the plane to get out of here,” Farrell said after being asked when an announcement could be expected. “We’ve got the last starts to make that further evaluation. We’re still evaluating.”

Despite Farrell’s claims, the rotation does appear relatively set with Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, Brett Cecil, Henderson Alvarez and Kyle Drabek as the most likely starting five.

The only question mark is Drabek, who in theory could still lose out to Aaron Laffey despite the lefty having surrendered nine earned runs in his final 10 innings of work this spring.

Toronto only needs a fifth starter once prior to April 21 because of three off-days during the first 12 days of the season. In the past, Farrell has opted to give his starters an extra day of rest whenever possible. But in this case, there would be too much time off if the club went with more than four starters in certain situations.

-Some unsettling news for an AL East rival the New York Yankees as they have placed newly acquired starting pitcher Michael Pineda on the 15-day DL to start the season with right shoulder stiffness.

The Yankees said they were relieved to find no structural damage for the big Dominican, who had been struggling all spring to regain the zip on his fastball.

“It’s great news, for what your biggest concerns are,” New York manager Joe Girardi told reporters at the Yankees’ spring training camp in Tampa, Florida.

“It just needs a little rest. He’ll get treatment and then we’ll see how long until he picks up a ball. We’ll be a little conservative.”

-More bad news on the injury front for another AL East team as the Tampa Bay Rays will start the season without their starting centre fielder BJ Upton.  Upton collided with fellow outfielder Desmond Jennings and injured his back, although the injury is not considered serious he is not eligible to return until April 9, 2012.

To add depth the Rays have acquired outfielder Kyle Hudson from the Rangers for future considerations, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News (on Twitter). Texas signed him to a minor league deal back in January.

The 25-year-old hit .296/.375/.336 line with 41 stolen bases in 485 minor league plate appearances last season.

AL East Rumour Roundup: Friday February 17

Slow day outside of a few links and stories:

-The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates finally consumated the long rumoured AJ Burnett trade with Burnett heading to Pittsburgh in exchange for minor leaguer pitcher Diego Moreno and outfielder Exicardo Cayones.

Scouts like the power arm of Diego Moreno, but there are a lot of questions about his maturity, tweets Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter) had the early reads on the Yankees’ imports from the Pirates.  Moreno can reach 98 mph on the gun but has command issues while Exicardo Cayones can hit but doesn’t have much in the way of power.

-Boston Red Sox hurler Tim Wakefield called it a career at age 45 after a 19-year career.  He owns a career 200-180 record, a 4.41 ERA and 2156 strikeouts over a whopping 3226.1 IPs.  He is Boston’s all time  leader in starts and innings pitched and was only 6 wins behind Roger Clemens and Cy Young for the all-time franchise mark.

Before deciding to call it a career, Tim Wakefield had offers from four clubs, writes Alex Speier of WEEI.com.  Agent Barry Meister says that one of the four offers was a guaranteed big league deal.

Wakefield didn’t consider any of those offers for long, tweets Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.  Upon hearing of the offers, the pitcher asked his agent, “Do they play for Boston?”

-In other Red Sox news veteran catcher Jason Varitek is leaning towards retiring.

AL East Roundup – Friday Feb 10, 2012

Some various AL East rumblings:

-It appears Manny Ramirez might have lost one suitor from the original ‘Jays, A’s and Orioles’ group as it does not appears the Orioles are interested anymore.

-A’s scouts saw Ramirez work out recently and they’re interested, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney confirms (Twitter link). A final decision on whether to try to sign him is expected within the next week.

The A’s continue pursuing Manny Ramirez and they’re much more interested in him than Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez’s health is more of a concern, Slusser writes. Signing Ramirez would be the last thing the A’s do before starting Spring Training, and a deal could be reached after camp opens.

-Orioles GM Dan Duquette told reporters he doesn’t see a fit for Manny Ramirez with Baltimore, tweets Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.

Analysis: It is hard to say whether the Jays are serious about adding Manny Ramirez or if they were used as the “other” team by Manny’s agents to create a market given the Jays team policy of not commenting on interest in a player one way or another.

-Amazingly the New York Yankees might find a suitor for SP A.J. Burnett as they continue discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

From Ben Nicholson-Smith at MLB Trade Rumours:

4:14pm: The Yankees are telling the Pirates that absorbing $10MM isn’t enough, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets.

3:47pm: The Pirates appear to be willing to absorb $10MM in a trade, Heyman tweets. The Yankees have been pushing for an even split and seek an OK prospect in return. Heyman tweets that the chances of a deal remain “decent.” The clubs are talking, but aren’t close to a deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. The Pirates are also looking at other starters.

12:34pm: There seems to be a fair amount of optimism about a deal, Heyman tweets.

10:28am: The Pirates haven’t yet offered to pay $10MM of the $33MM remaining on Burnett’s contract, Heyman tweets.

7:57am: The Yankees and Pirates continue discussing a possible A.J. Burnett trade, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. The Yankees are willing to pay a substantial portion of the $33MM remaining on the right-hander’s contract through 2013, but the teams are still a few million apart. The Yankees first asked the Pirates to pay well over $11MM, Heyman writes.

The Yankees want to create payroll room for a designated hitter and appear to be leaning toward Raul Ibanez, perhaps because they prefer his ability to play the outfield. Johnny Damon and Eric Chavez also intrigue the Yankees as possible free agent additions, according to Heyman. The Pirates rejected the Yankees’ request for Garrett Jones, Heyman writes.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Burnett’s no-trade list includes all of the teams on the West Coast (Twitter links). Sherman expects the Yankees to trade Burnett before Spring Training and suggests the team is waiting to see if the Pirates or another club offers to absorb more money.

Jays Talk: AL East Recap

Some various Jays related and AL East rumblings:

-Chicago Cubs assistant GM Jed Hoyer was on ESPN 1000 sports radio and discussed Matt Garza’s status and possibly keeping him longer term.

“It was a long (arbitration) process, but we talked to Matt a number of times since and we’re happy we didn’t have to go into a hearing room with him,” Hoyer said. “He’s a great pitcher and a guy we’re going to talk to him about being part of our future, for sure. We need more guys like Matt, not less, and if we can work something out we’ll certainly have those discussions.”

This could be posturing and I would fully expect the rebuilding Cubbies to explore all possible trade options, and if available the Cubs would love to get their hands on some of the Jays top prospects.

-MLB Trade rumors reports the Yankees want Garrett Jones from the Pirates in any trade involving A.J. Burnett reports ESPN’s Buster Olney, but Pittsburgh isn’t interested in moving him and talks haven’t progressed (Twitter links). Yesterday we learned that the Pirates are not on Burnett’s no-trade list.

-Rays GM Andrew Friedman said it was a “dream scenario” to make the upgrades they did without sacrificing depth during an interview with 620AM radio, says Marc Topkin of The Tampa Times (Twitter link). Tampa added free agents Carlos Pena, Luke Scott, and Jose Molina this offseason.

-Ben Nicholson-Smith writes the Twins announced that they claimed Darin Mastroianni from the Blue Jays, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com tweets. The Blue Jays designated the outfielder for assignment last week to create roster space for Francisco Cordero.

Mastroianni made his MLB debut with the 2011 Blue Jays after spending most of the season at Double-A and Triple-A. The 26-year-old posted a .268/.353/.377 line with 34 stolen bases (44 attempts) in the upper minors last year. He has minor league experience at all three outfield positions and has mostly played center field.

-Canadian hurler Rich Harden had a shoulder operation performed by Dr. James Andrews to repair a torn capsule and will miss the entire 2012 MLB season.

-A interesting story on Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd who discussed his rampant usage of cocaine during his playing days, admitting he was under the influence of cocaine two-thirds of the time he was on the mound.

AL East Notes: Tuesday

-A lot of Yoenis Cespedes talk today, doesn’t look like the Toronto Blue Jays are going to be big time players for the cuban outfielder, most insiders feel the Miami Marlins have the inside track.

- The Yankees inked Bill Hall to a minor league contract earlier today, creating some competition in Spring Training.

Hall, 32, posted a .211/.261/.314 line in 199 plate appearances for the Astros and Giants last year, playing mostly second base.  In more of a utility role for the 2010 Red Sox, Hall managed 18 home runs in 382 plate appearances.

- Although Hall was signed the Yankees continue to be focused on Eric Chavez and Raul Ibanez according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

- Also, Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that the Yankees are not offering more than $2MM for a DH-type and might not even want to spend more than $1MM.

- Orioles executive director of international recruiting Fred Ferreira will watch Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler in the Dominican Republic when he travels to watch Yoenis Cespedes play, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports.
