I always enjoyed Jesse for two reasons: I appreciated his demeanor and professionalism, and I thought he was a heck of a defender.

I don’t know if he originated the practice (highly doubtful), but he was the first OF that I ever saw line up a fly ball 2-3 steps behind where he’d catch it. This let him get his momentum moving in the proper direction. Then he’d launch his throw, which was very strong and mostly accurate. It made you hope for ‘routine’ fly balls to right with a runner on base. It got to the point where few teams would run against him, unless they were desperate or hot dogging.

I think James Gentile hit the nail on the head with his comment: it speaks to our tendency to under-appreciate or take for granted. Until I looked into Jesse’s career by the numbers, I didn’t appreciate how good he really was. I watched him and marveled; now I’ve studied his numbers and marveled. What Greg Maddux was on the mound, Jesse Barfield was in the field. Think about that for a moment or two. This, my friend, is baseball at its absolute finest.

This is amazing work… Barfield was always someone you just heard about as a great defender but I was pretty young when he was in his heyday and I haven’t thought to research it. Wish we had him now. He’s like another ex-Jay Raul Mondesi whom I have always admired.

This was originally written in 2009 when Jose Reyes wasn’t even a thought. I don’t think any GM wouldn’t have taken Marco Scutaro from basically 2008 to today. He has been a very valuable player. 2.9, 4.2, 2.1, 2.6, 2.1 and a;ready 1.4 today.

Whether 2b, 3b or SS you find a position for a player like that. Heck even 1b considering how little Adam Lind has done since 2009!

WAR is absolutely available for that time period. Reyes season was derailed after making a poor slide into second base. Despite this, Reyes is one of the best hitting shortstops (either 1 or 2, depending on how one views Tulo) and best baserunners in the game. Reyes is not only younger than Scutaro, but also much, much better. Scutaro was nice while he was here, but to say we should have kept him is a bit of stretch.
