As per the AP:
The Red Sox are preparing to announce that John Farrell will be their new manager, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal to bring the former Boston pitching coach back one year after the ballclub first tried to give him the top job.
The announcement was delayed by the unusual logistics of hiring a manager under contract with another team, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the final procedural steps had not been cleared. But the three-year deal to replace Bobby Valentine could be announced as soon as Sunday, the official said.
The announcement was delayed by the unusual So what are the Blue Jays receiving in compensation and who will be replacing John Farrell as our manager next season?
Word on the street the Blue Jays will announce Sandy Alomar Jr as the teams next manager and utility infielder Mike Aviles will be the compensation piece. A lot of fans are disappointed at the return of “only” Mike Aviles but I ask you what is the realistic price for a manager who didn’t lead the Blue Jays to even one remotely competitive season?
Shame on you if you thought the Blue Jays were about to receive a game changing pitcher like Daniel Bard or Clay Buchholz for a lame duck manager. Not saying John Farrell is a horrible manager but let’s be honest he is unproven at best and clearly a guy the Jays weren’t sold on as their commander in chief.
Farrell is not only unproven but had only one year left on his deal with the Jays and certainly not some hot commodity that would land a hot prospect or a potential top of the rotation arm. The Miami Marlins had to give up only two third rate prospects to land a World Series winning, big name proven manager in Ozzie Guillen.
I applaud Alex Anthopolous for not letting this drag on and moving the franchise in a new direction with a fresh face at the helm.
