Agreed. There was discussion somewhere (mlbtraderumors.com? Keith Law?) that Comer’s velocity had dropped to around 88 mph. I don’t know how significant that is for young, newly-drafted players but I also wonder how much time is given to a declining prospect. Musgrove’s a different matter, though.
You’re right. So, JPA, David Cooper, and whom for Josh Johnson? After all, MIA needs a catcher (John Buck) and a 1B (Carlos Lee). One of the Lansing Three, perhaps.
The problem is that we might be left with Lind again. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the Lugnuts…
JPA would be a great addition for Florida and I can’t believe how far John Buck has fallen, he barely gets full time ABs.
Not sure if Cooper would interest them but maybe if he remains hot his stock will take an uptick.
I’d be totally against trading Aaron Sanchez and of Syndergaard and Nicolino I think I’d rather see Nicolino moved.
I’d have to think that could score almost any available pitcher within reason.
I wasn’t sure so I checked, and it was just as I suspected. I remember being underwhelmed when the Jays signed John Buck in ’10. He impressed me as a mediocre catcher at best. But he was mediocre and declining. Prior to signing with the Jays, his career high was 0.7 rWAR and his defense was indifferent.
Then he was an All Star with the Jays. I think he had a good rep with the pitching staff, and his numbers were pretty good. But that season was a career season: it was so far above his career norms that there was no way he’d reproduce them (in my opinion, anyways).
Not signing him to another contract was a good move: TOR already had good depth at C and they received a pick for him. Interestingly, though, TOR gave up two of their supplemental picks from the ’11 draft in the JA Happ deal: Joe Musgrove (Buck) and Kevin Comer (Olivo). Now he’s going to cost them the balance of $6M for this season and another $6M next year. All this for an indifferent defensive catcher who can’t hit. Thanks but I’ll take Happ et al any time.
I am surprised how many prospects were given up for Happ and company though. Seeing Comer head out the door with Musgrove was a bit strange but I trust AA thinks there value has maxed and wanted to move them NOW.
